Key Biscayne Community Foundation’s Healthy Aging Initiative

The Key Biscayne Community Foundation’s Healthy Aging Initiative seeks to increase physical activity in the older adult population in an effort to decrease the risk of developing high blood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, and depression. Seniors–even the frailest–can improve their health and maintain their independence by incorporating physical activity into their daily lives. Seniors need access to enjoyable physical activity opportunities that are evidence-based and designed to meet their specific physical needs. These programs, which are designed specifically for older adults, are nationally recognized and scientifically based.

When people enter the sixty and over phase of life, most haven’t planned for their well being. Finding outlets to maintain their fitness and energy level can be difficult, however it is imperative to fend off the single greatest issue affecting their future quality of life: the high probability of chronic disease.

The Alliance for Aging Research reports that by age 65, nearly nine out of ten Americans will have at least one chronic condition. Most Americans drastically underestimate their chances of getting a chronic disease. An enhanced focus on promoting and preserving the health of older adults is essential if we are to effectively address the health and economic challenges of an aging society.

KBCF’s Healthy Aging Initiatives provide and promote evidence-based healthy aging programs ensuring that added years are healthy years for South Floridians. We currently offer two programs–A Matter of Balance and EnhanceFitness–in the communities of Key Biscayne, Coral Gables and Miami Gardens.
